On tonight’s Declaring Independence I’ll be talking to:
Dave Weigel of the Washington Independent about his experiences attending guns shows and tea parties over the last few weeks; and,
Radley Balko about our broken criminal justice system and how to fix it.

On today’s episode of Declaring Independence I will be interviewing two interesting guests. The first is Lindsay Beyerstein, who blogs at Majikthise and writes for the Washington Independent. We will be discussing the influence of lobbyists in Washington and the incestuous relationship between money and politics in this country.
My second guest is Joann Bell, whose story is a remarkable one. She filed a lawsuit to get rid of school-sanctioned prayer at her childrens’ school and had her house burned down. She is now the director of the very group that represented her in that case, the ACLU of Oklahoma.

This is a preview of the January 29 episode of Declaring Independence. I will have two guests. The first is Ayaan Hirsi Ali in an interview I taped last week when she was in Grand Rapids for a speaking engagement. Ali is an outspoken critic of radical Islam, particularly its treatment of women, and she has good reason to be. She escaped an arranged marriage in Somalia and was the victim of female circumcision when she was 5 years old.
The second is Ken Miller, a cell biologist from Brown University. We will be discussing the intelligent design movement and this interview should last about 40 minutes and be quite detailed in looking at irreducible complexity as an argument for ID, among other subjects.

This week’s show will be a little different than what we usually do. The first half of the show will be routine; the first guest will be Jeff Morley, national editorial director for the Center for Independent Media. We’ll be discussing the use of torture by the Bush administration and whether Obama should or will pursue criminal charges for war crimes against high ranking officials, including Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld.
In the second half of the show, we’ll be playing two important speeches back to back. First, Martin Luther King’s I Have a Dream speech from 1963, delivered on the National Mall. Second, President Obama’s inaugural address, delivered on that same mall.

12-18-08: David Bennahum and Lauri Lebo
The two guests for the 12-18-08 show were David Bennahum, the founder and president of the Center for Independent Media, and Lauri Lebo, who covered the federal court case Kitzmiller v Dover Area School District and wrote the book The Devil in Dover: An Insider’s Story of Dogma v. Darwin in Small-town America.
David Bennahum discussed the mission of the Center for Independent Media, where I am a fellow, and the deepening crisis in the newspaper business. He argued that the rise of blogs and the notion of citizen journalism were both cause and effect of those troubles.
Lauri Lebo discussed the 2005 federal trial that ruled intelligent design out of public …
